"Evil prevails when good men do nothing." My name is Nathan Smith Jones and I'm running for the Utah State Legislature because I'm a good man trying to do something. I've been a public school teacher for thirteen years. I live in Provo with my wife and five children. This is my first time running for office (my students suggested I run after I taught them about the political process), and I believe I can be a force for good, one that stands for honesty and integrity in state government.
“I'm pro-life personally, but asking politicians their stance is ridiculous. No pro-life president in the last 40 years has overturned Roe vs. Wade, so what's the point? Women do have a choice, and with education, they can also choose to give the right to life for their unborn child. ”
“As an an educator myself, I strongly support public education. I believe teachers need to be given a reason to be the best teachers they can be. I believe there are several ways we can watch, scrutinize and maximize the effectiveness of the taxpayer money we put into education. I believe we need to hold traditional public schools AND public charter schools to a high standard.”
“Some call it "Amnesty." Others call it "Common Sense." I believe in securing our borders. Absolutely. I also believe in the immigration policy that Marco Rubio supported during his campaign for president. We need to impose fines on those who have broken the law and stayed here illegally, but deporting 12 million illegal immigrants is neither practical nor is it responsible. ”
“I support not allowing companies to take advantage of workers, but I also don't like the idea of unions forcing employees to pay for their existence, nor do I agree with unions creating an environment in which people simply don't have to do much work, they become entitled, and it's almost impossible to fire someone.”
“Economic and Tax Policy should simply HELP THE PEOPLE. Not some, but all. Tax policies should be common sense. Good people know when a policy is fair or not, and good people when a policy inordinately causes small business owners undue stress. Yes, I am running as a Democrat, and I believe in limited-yet-sensible government.”
“I believe the State of Utah should provide a SMALL, MICROSCOPIC amount of aid to the local coal industry. However, just because a business employs more than a few thousand people doesn't mean that the other millions of taxpayers will pay for the owners of those industries. You want to build a port in Oakland for $53 million? Great. GET A LOAN. THE STATE OF UTAH IS NOT YOUR A.T.M. ”
“I support the 2nd amendment, but I see both sides. I believe there SHOULD be legal restrictions and background checks. Waiting 3 days to get a gun shouldn't be a problem. High-power assault weapons SHOULD BE DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN Though it's officially unconstitutional to require citizens to get a driver's license, it is nevertheless the law. Which projectile causes more deaths---guns or cars?”
“We all love our farms and farmers. We know they work hard. However, THE SUBSIDIES WE OFFER FARMERS SHOULD BE MONITORED. The fact is that if the government subsidizes one industry, they need to subsidize ALL industries, and that's crazy. Why is the government many trillions in debt and yet so many farmers in this country are flush with cash? THIS MAKES NO SENSE.”
“Here are the facts: No one spends money wisely when there are NO CONSEQUENCES TO THEM PERSONALLY This is the reason GOVERNMENT SHOULD NEVER BE TRUSTED TO RUN OR PUT MONEY INTO ANY BUSINESS. From the guy the government gave millions to create a flying machine (who failed miserably, while two guys from Ohio did it with their own money and ingenuity) to Solyndra today, THIS NEVER WORKS! ”
UTAH STATE HOUSE REP. DISTRICT 63
To talk to friends and to let them know that I'm a CONSERVATIVE Democrat, and not to fear voting for a democrat. Though a proud independent who leans conservative in the ways that truly matter, I'm running as a Democrat so I can let voters know that new voices they can TRUST are needed in our Utah State Government.
