I support improving our local schools to address our unique and difficult challenges. I also support local trade schools and technical training for high school students AND adults, so those that do not go on to college can have a future too. Our local businesses need qualified and trained workers.

Quality education needs to be a right for everyone regardless of social and/or economic status. This education should include adequate preparation to become a functional adult. Mandatory courses should include financial literacy, a thorough understanding of credit, a more in depth look at how politics work and exposure to vocational and technology based career options.

I support taking measures to improve civic education in Maryland by requiring the coursework include a deeper understanding of civics philosophy and ideas from the past to the current era. Books like "the lies my teachers told me" by Dr. James Loewen should be required coursework to be learned to help create responsible citizens who participate in civics.

Rising levels of child poverty and inequity demand that Maryland reform its educational Thorton plan funding formula. MD public school system is being underfunded by $2.9 billion which means each public school in MD is averaging $2 in underfunding per year. I strongly support investing state monies to address this inequity in the public school system.

I strongly oppose larger class sizes and less individualized instruction. Underfunding of education has resulted in increasing teacher to student ratios. This is bad for our kids and stifles innovation.
