I am running for President to bring Americans together, restore our nation’s strength and make the world a safer, more secure place - and I have the experience to lead us and do it. In Ohio, the ultimate swing state, I was reelected last year by a 30-point margin after working with my fellow Ohioans to turn an $8 billion shortfall into a $2 billion surplus, cut taxes $5 billion and make Ohio one of the top job-creating states in the nation. As chair of the Budget Committee in Congress I led the effort to balance the federal budget for the first time in a generation.
“The spirit of our country … doesn’t rest in the President. I mean, the President is important. But the spirit of our country rests in the neighborhoods – in the people[.] We’re the ones who need to change the world. We’re the ones who need to fix education [and] deal with the problems of the poor. ”
“I am opposed to abortion except in the case of rape, incest, and life of the mother. I hope Roe v. Wade will be repealed, and then it will be turned to the states and the states will have to figure out exactly what the restrictions ought to be.”
“In regard to same sex marriage, I don’t favor it. I’ve always favored traditional marriage. But, look, the Court has ruled and I’ve moved on. … Because somebody doesn’t think the way I do, doesn’t mean I can’t care about them or can’t love them. … We need to give everybody a chance, treat everybody with respect, and let them share in this great American dream that we have.”
“We want all the sources of energy. We want to dig coal, but we want to clean it when we burn it. We believe in natural gas. We believe in nuclear power … I believe in solar energy, wind energy, efficiency; renewables matter. … Battery technology can unleash an entirely different world. You can have a strong environmental policy at the same time you have strong economic growth.”
“The problem is, I don’t think a lack of gun laws . . . if you focus on the guns you’re missing the bigger picture which is the fact that people have been isolated [and] estranged. Trying to take away guns I don’t think is going to solve this problem.”
“How we would even begin to think about taking a mom or a dad out of a house – when they have not committed a crime since they’ve been here – leaving their children in the house … that is not, in my opinion, the kind of values that we believe in. … Finish the border. Guest worker. Pay a fine. A path to legalization – and not citizenship. We’ve got to get this done.”
“If you cut taxes for corporations and you cut taxes for individuals, you’re going to make things move ... But we have to have fiscal discipline … When you’re in a position of managing regulations, when you reduce taxes, and when you have fiscal discipline – you see the job creators begin to get very comfortable with the fact that they can invest.”
“If you ever do drugs, then you destroy what you were made to be. Yes, [I’ve smoked marijuana]. I’m not all hung-up about marijuana. We don’t want to demonize people; I just don’t want to legalize drugs. When it comes to medical marijuana, if the experts ... say we need this for people with seizures, I’m for that.”
