Quick Bio

I am a mother, physician, and pioneering environmental-health advocate. I was born and raised in Illinois, graduated from Harvard College in 1973, and from Harvard Medical School in 1979. I have led initiatives promoting healthy communities, local green economies and the revitalization of democracy, addressing issues such as campaign finance reform, green jobs, racially-just redistricting, and the cleanup of incinerators, coal plants, and toxic threats. I was a principal organizer for the Global Climate Convergence for People, Planet and Peace over Profit.

My Positions

Civil Liberties and Civil Rights

“End police brutality and mass incarceration. Create a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to understand and eliminate the legacy of slavery that lives on as pervasive racism in the economy, education, housing and health. Ensure that communities control their police rather than police controlling our communities. Expand women’s rights, protect LGBTQIA+ people from discrimination.”

Immigration & Deportation

“The Green New Deal will end the war on immigrants, which is terrorizing millions of both citizens and non-citizen immigrants, on no basis other than their perceived immigration status. We need to provide a welcoming and legal path to the immigrants who have always been the backbone of our economy and the diversity that makes this country great. Stop deportations that tear immigrant families apart.”

Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll

“I would actually use science to determine which drugs are dangerous and which ones are not. Start with the legalization of marijuana and transform the drug system from a criminal system to a public health system. If people have issues of dependency on legal or illegal drugs, they need to be treated within the public health system.”

Energy Technology & Coal

“End destructive energy extraction: fracking, tar sands, offshore drilling, oil trains, mountaintop removal, and uranium mines. Create millions of jobs by transitioning to 100% clean renewable energy by 2030.”

Tax & Spend

“Though the elite are richer than ever, they are contributing less than ever to the tax base that keeps the infrastructure their profits rely upon going. Make Wall Street, big corporations, and the rich pay their fair share of taxes. Rewrite the entire tax code to be truly progressive with tax cuts for working families, the poor and middle class, and higher taxes for the richest Americans. ”

Guns & Ammunition

“It's very important that we ban assault weapons, for starters, but there are other steps that need to be taken quickly. Local communities need to be able to regulate guns, as needed, to deal with their violence. So, we need to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. We need background checks, so that the mentally ill are not possessing and using guns. And we need to end the gun show loopholes.”

STRONGLY SUPPORT

Abortion

“Real choice must include more than the choice of whether or not to have an abortion, and must begin with an informed choice about preventing unintended pregnancy. By providing all women with reproductive health care and family planning, as part of a program of health care as a human right, we can greatly reduce the need for abortion. ”

Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness

“My Power to the People Plan creates deep system change, moving to a human-centered economy that puts people, planet and peace over profit. It offers direct answers to the economic, social, and ecological crises brought on by both corporate political parties. And it empowers the American people to fix our broken political system and make real the promise of democracy.”
