I was elected Governor of New Mexico when everyone said I didn’t have a chance. A businessman who had never sought or held elected office, running as a Republican in an overwhelmingly Democratic state. But I worked hard and financed my own campaign. New Mexicans voted for me and re-elected me by an even bigger margin. I did what I said I would do. I told people the truth, and I tried to run the state the same way I ran my business, and my life. Don’t promise what you can’t deliver. Deliver what you can on time and under budget. And most of all, don’t waste anyone’s time or money.
“I support the legalization of marijuana and believe each state should have the right to legalize and regulate it rather than criminalize it. I was an early proponent on the national stage in 1999 while Governor of NM and publicly stated my support of marijuana legalization. I do not support the legalization of other recreational drugs.”
“I have the utmost respect for the deeply-held convictions of those on both sides of the abortion issue. However, I recognize that the right of a woman to choose is the law of the land, and has been for several decades. That right must be respected, and each woman must be allowed to make personal decisions about her own health and well-being without persecution or denial of health services.”
“It is NOT the proper role of government to engage in social and economic engineering for the purpose of manipulating the energy marketplace or creating winners and losers in what should be a robust free market. Preventing a polluter from harming our water or air is one thing. Deciding in Washington, DC, that one source of energy should be subsidized and others penalized is a different matter.”
“A 10-foot wall just requires an 11-foot ladder. Having served as Governor of a border state, I support a simplified and secure system of work visas by which willing workers and willing employers can meet in a robust labor marketplace efficiently and economically. Aspiring immigrants would undergo a background check, pay taxes and provide proof of employment.”
“We live in America. We live in a free society where we are able to make choices. It's about giving individuals freedoms and holding them accountable. ”
“We need to protect our right to keep and bear arms. Restrictions should be in place against criminals and the mentally ill, while banning people on the 'no-fly list' from purchasing guns and ammunition without due process is unconstitutional.”
“Many Americans believe that the biggest threat to their liberty is the government. That is simply unacceptable in a nation that was literally founded on the notion of liberty. I really believe that at the heart of the militarization of police has been the War on Drugs. A person of color has a much greater likelihood of going to jail for drugs than a white person. ”
“I support the elimination of tax subsidies, the double taxation in business income taxes, and ultimately, the replacement of all income and payroll taxes with a single consumption tax that will allow every American and every business to determine their tax burden by making their own spending decisions. Taxes on purchases for basic necessities would be 'probated.'”
